Focus: Construct representations of multiple causes of event

Activities:
1. As a class, ask students to look through all the sources used in the module and collaboratively brainstorm a list of possible causes that led to the riots in Ferguson. In addition to using the source, students are also encouraged to draw from their background knowledge to connect to possible causes. Then, the teacher records these ideas on the board.
2. Introduce and explain three categories related to historical frameworks (social, political, and economic). Discuss which of these apply to the current inquiry around the Ferguson riots.TC_Bubble
3. Individually, students construct causal maps based on the brainstormed list of causes.TC_Bubble
4. Using the causal maps that student’s generated, have students write a final response to the question: “What caused the riots in Ferguson, Missouri?”
