Students should be able to change their perspectives based upon evidence. Coming in to this class, students have a lot of preconceived notions that are not necessarily born out by the evidence, and this activity is the first point where I ask them to compare what they thought with what they are now learning. Asking students what the new information is doing to their existing information is a strategy used by Bain that I would like to incorporate more into the classroom. In an effort to push students beyond reproducing conclusions, this questioning strategy requires students to take a more active role in the process of creating and defending their own interpretations and conclusions.
