Module Introduction

This module was implemented in a 6th grade classroom at the beginning of the school year. In this module, students are introduced to physical artifacts as one type of source and the idea that we use multiple sources to learn about the past. This module is also designed to help students begin to develop a disposition of reading with an inquiry stance for several types of sources.

Students make observations and inferences about physical artifacts from the past and then read complementary print sources about one artifact to draw conclusions about the artifact. The process of making observations and inferences to draw conclusions lays the groundwork for making evidence-based claims about sources (where observations become evidence, inferences become reasoning, and conclusions become claims).
